2018 Recipients of Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation Funding
A & O: Support Services for Older Adults
With roots that trace back to 1957, the focus of A & O: Support Services for Older Adults’ operations is identifying and addressing many of the issues facing older adults. Hand in hand wtih older adults, and through partnerships with community groups, the agency takes action to improve the quality of life for older adults in Manitoba through advocacy, education and service delivery. A & O strives to involve older adults in decision-making. Their expertise is an important contribution to building a healthy community in which older adults play a vital role.
The Safe Suite program provides temporary housing for individuals 55+, regardless of gender, who are in need of a safe place to stay due to abuse or neglect. Clients are provided with furnished accomodations for up to 60 days at no cost. Registered Social Workers provide counselling services and practical assistance in accessing housing, financial and legal services.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation grant will support furnishings for two suites (one new and one existing) within the Safe Suite Program.
Bravestone Centre Inc.
Bravestone Centre offers women and their children the opportunity to heal and grow in a cooperative, caring environment with other families who have shared a similar experience. Bravestone Centre believes that families must be free from danger to break the cycle of violence.
Bravestone Centre is a non-profit charitable organization that provides women and their children affected by domestic violence with secure and safe on-site housing, individual and group therapeutic counseling, support programs, advocacy, and connection with community resources. address the needs of women who have already taken steps toward resolving the initial crisis involved in their decision to separate from their abusive partner.
Bravestone Centre is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. For over 28 years, under the previous name of WISH Inc. (Women in Second Stage Housing), they have been honoured to work with courageous women and their children as they break free from family violence.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation grant will go towards the replacement of beds and mattresses within the program family suites.
Esther House Inc.
Working in close cooperation with the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM), Esther House has assisted women to move back into the community with a strong sense of confidence in their abilities to deal with their addictions and move forward in their lives. While at Esther House, many of these women have enrolled in training and upgrading, sought and found gainful employment and become reunited with their families.
Esther House Inc. is a non-profit, community-based facility that provides shelter and support to women in second-stage recovery from addiction. It is one of the few non-co-ed places where women can stay for a period of up to twelve months while making the transition back into society. Esther House is a safe house that provides the infrastructure necessary for women to heal, and gain confidence and self-esteem in order to continue their journey of life in recovery.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation grant will go towards ongoing operational funding assistance.
Knowles Centre Inc.
Knowles Centre is a community-based, nonprofit social service agency for children, adolescents and young adults facing difficult times in their lives. It began as a home for boys in 1907, and today provides a range of therapeutic and skills-based programs to young people from Manitoba and other communities throughout Canada. Their mission is to help young people and their families to address past struggles, develop healthier relationships and ways of life, and reach their full potential in the future.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation grant will fund maintenance and cleaning of the suites boiler.
L’Arche Winnipeg Inc.
Our mission is: to make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities revealed through mutually transforming relationships; to foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, whilst being faithful to the core values of our founding story; engage in our diverse cultures, working tougher towards a more humane society.
L’Arche Winnipeg began in 1973. Our community has grown over the years, and today we welcome 28 people with a developmental disability who are living in our six houses and two supported-living apartments, along with approximately 20 assistants, many of whom have come from other countries to experience L’Arche and make Winnipeg their home. Four of our houses, our apartments, and our office area in the east end of Winnipeg (Transcona) and are all within walking distance of each other. Our two other homes are closer to downtown Winnipeg (in Windsor Park and St. Boniface).
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation grant will help fund the replacement of kitchen cupboards in Anchor home.
Main Street Project
Main Street Project provides a safe place of respite, shelter and support, with dignity and without judgment to individuals in our community experiencing homelessness and addiction. They advocate for a more inclusive society and assist marginalized individuals to make a real choice.
Main Street Project’s vision is that every individual has a safe place to be, and an opportunity to make real choices. They help hold communities by supporting addictions, chronic and acute illness, housing and mental health issues. By addressing these principles in each individual journey, they contribute to overall quality of life of our community members. Since 1972 they’ve served the needs of Winnipeg’s most vulnerable residents and have always worked towards helping our community find its collective footing.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funding will help replace the concrete entrance of Mainstay Residence, to make it more accessible for those residents with disabilities.
Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council Inc.
Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council Inc. (MIIC) is Manitoba’s largest refugee settlement agency. Through the agency’s Settlement and Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) and its Educational and Community Services Division, MIIC staff work with multicultural, multi-linguistic and multi-faith communities in Manitoba to support Government Assisted Refugees (GARs), Privately Sponsored Refugees (PSRs) and other newcomers.
The agency has over 65 years of history of sustainability and growth. Governed by a multi-faith volunteer Board the agency mobilizes resources from the government, and the general community, to deliver high-quality services to help integrate refugees into Canadian society. Under the direction of the Board the agency monitors government policies and attitudes towards refugees and works cooperatively with federal, provincial and non-government agencies which are concerned for the welfare of refugees. The agency ensures through its programming and community connections with other like-minded and specialized agencies that refugees access and receive services that are necessary and appropriate for an individual and family need.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funding will help support the purchase of bed bug mattress and pillow protector covers, and the replacement of fridges for residents at Welcome Place.
New Directions for Children, Youth, Adults and Families
Since 1885, New Directions has been evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of the Winnipeg community. They have redefined their services to work better with children, youth, adults and families as they chart their own course within the community. Services are divided into three categories: Counselling, Assessment, Support and Prevention Programs; Training and Education Programs; and Residential and Support Programs. New Directions strives to offer everyone the same opportunities to achieve the life they’ve dreamed of – a life full of promise, potential, respect and self-worth. We believe in a person-centered approach.
At New Directions, a wide range of services are provided that encompass a multitude of areas that can affect people’s lives. Some people may use one service, others may use several. Regardless of how many services someone uses, New Directions provides support as people take steps to improve their lives—and through them, the lives of others in the community.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funding will help provide new beds and bug-proof mattresses for participants in the SAL program.
Red Road Lodge
The Red Road Lodge is located on the corner of Logan and Main Street in the heart of Winnipeg’s homeless community. Operating as a transitional, supportive housing facility, it is the only dry, safe single-room-occupancy hotel on the notorious downtown strip. The Lodge provides homes to 44 individuals in recovery from addictions, suffering with a mental illness, or often both.
A proven housing model, significantly contributes to long-term successful tenancies, addiction recovery, mental health wellness, reintegration, volunteer & employment opportunities. Combined with a dry approach to housing marginalized people, they provide critical Life Skills Programs, including REACH the STREET, a new employment training initiative.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funding will help support the purchase of a high heat treatment heater to treat bed bugs within their resident suites.
The Salvation Army – Booth Centre
Since 1886, The Salvation Army in the community of Winnipeg has been meeting needs and providing hope and dignity to those who need it most. Located in Winnipeg’s downtown core, The Salvation Army Booth Centre Ministries continues a tradition of caring service to individuals and families coping with homelessness, poverty, addictions and mental illness. Booth Centre Ministries offers short and long-term accommodations and meals for up to 250 men and women in a clean, safe and secure environment. Care for an additional 60 persons is offered through Booth Centre Ministries’ Sonrise Village Family Shelter. Services include transitional shelter, Sonrise Village Family Shelter, private and semi-private rooms for men and women, dormitory accommodations, additional “cold weather” space on days of extreme cold, family shelter suites with two or three bedrooms including accessible suites, meals, weekly housekeeping, laundry facilities, and an emergency clothing depot.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funding will support kitchen equipment for their newly constructed kitchen and dining room.
Two Ten Recovery
Since 2007, Two Ten Recovery has provided abstinent-based accommodations in clean, safe and structured environments for men & women in recovery from drug and/or alcohol addiction.
The mandate of the project is to help individuals who have a desire to stay clean and sober, become productive members of society. The project values the participants involved in the 12-step recovery fellowships and believes it is essential to healthy sobriety. It is Two Ten’s philosophy that individuals need to possess honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness to initiate a change in their lifestyle.
The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funding will support various renovation and upkeep projects throughout the homes.
YWCA Brandon
YWCA Meredith Place is a quality, 24-hour co-ed facility, with 21 bedrooms. Transitional housing and supervised care are offered to a wide variety of clients in need of safe, supportive, affordable housing. The residents of Meredith Place are provided with shelter, meals, support, information and referrals to assist them in acquiring skills to move towards their maximum level of independence. Emergency Units are also available for women and children who are homeless.
