What is Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation?

How long has Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation been in existence?

The foundation received its registered charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency in September of 2007. The Foundation was previously known as Manitoba Real Estate Association Shelter Foundation.

Why did MREA create its own charitable foundation?

Manitoba REALTORS® recognize that shelter is a vital component of our communities and understand that structured fundraising and philanthropy are beneficial to community development.

Therefore, the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation was created to support Manitoba charities that are devoted to shelter-related causes.

What does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation do?

The foundation is a non-profit charitable organization that grants money for shelter-related registered charities in Manitoba.

Does MREA support the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation?

Administrative support is provided and general administrative costs are funded through a grant from The Manitoba Real Estate Association.

Does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation receive government funding?

The foundation does not receive any municipal, provincial or federal government funding.

How does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation decide which organizations receive grants?

Grant applications are reviewed and given due consideration at the meeting of the board of governors in October of each year. Provided the organization(s) meets the granting criteria of the foundation, and dependent upon the number of applications received and the available funding, the board will decide which grant application(s) most closely match the granting mandate of the foundation and may award grants to one or more organizations.

Who sits on the Board of Governors of the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation?

The foundation is directed by a board of governors consisting of REALTOR® volunteers and public individuals who are passionate about making Manitoba a better place for everyone.

How many registered shelter-related charities has the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation funded?

There have been 39 shelter-related charitable organizations in Manitoba that have received grants from the foundation since 2008; in all 116 grants have been awarded totaling over $500,000.

How does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation raise money?

The foundation raises funds through organized events, campaigns like Close a Sale – Open a Door, and donations from REALTORS®, individuals, groups and organizations.

How much does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation spend on fundraising?

The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation does not utilize donated funds for fundraising activities.

The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation agrees with the Canada Revenue Agency that if fundraising activity becomes the primary emphasis of the charity then it is not operating for exclusively charitable purposes and moreover if a substantial portion of the charity’s revenues is devoted to fundraising activity, it is not considered to be devoting its resources to charitable activities.

Does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation hire external fundraising organizations?

The foundation does not hire or employ any third-party fundraising organizations.

Who can donate to the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation?

The foundation graciously accepts donations from the public and from within the real estate industry.

What is the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation Builder Program?

Those 100 individuals who donated $1,000 are known as Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation Builders for perpetuity. For further information, click here.

How does my donation make a difference, and how will it be utilized?

Your donation will help to support a registered Manitoba-based charitable organization that will provide shelter and safety to those less fortunate citizens.

How can I donate to the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation?

Donations can be made online directly to the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation here.

Donations can also be made to the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation Fund – an Agency Fund through a partnership with The Winnipeg Foundation here. (You will be redirected to the website of The Winnipeg Foundation).

How can I coordinate an event to help raise funds for the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation?

Third-party fundraising events may be held in accordance with the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation’s third-party fundraising kit.

How do I make a donation in honour of, or in memory of someone?

Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation? 

Tax receipts are promptly issued for any donation of $25.00 or more; gifts to the foundation may also be eligible for a tax receipt and will be determined on an individual basis in accordance with current Canada Revenue Agency guidelines.

When will I receive my tax receipt?

Tax receipts will generally be issued within one months’ time of the donation being received; it may take from six to eight weeks for delivery through the mail.

Will the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation sell or trade my name and address?

The foundation does not share donor information with any outside parties or organizations.

Do I have any rights as a donor?

All donors can expect to have access to the foundation’s most recent financial statements, to be assured that their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given, and to receive acknowledgment and recognition where appropriate, or anonymity is preferred.

Can I apply for a grant from the Manitoba REALTOR® Shelter Foundation? 

Shelter-related Manitoban registered charitable organizations may submit a grant application by September 15 of each year.

My project will be finished before the board makes their grant decisions; is the project still eligible for funding?

The foundation will not fund budget deficits; activities completed, or costs incurred prior to the current year of application; political activities; fundraising events; or requests to fund other registered charities’ endowment funds.

Our audited financial statements will not be completed until after the application deadline; what should we do?

We encourage you to call or email the foundation with any specific questions related to the grant application procedure.

How much funding should I request?

The foundation will not advise an organization as to how much funding they should request; we encourage organizations to prepare a thorough assessment of how much funding they will require and apply accordingly.

As a registered charity, what rules does the Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation have to follow?

The Manitoba REALTORS® Shelter Foundation and anyone who is acting on behalf of the Foundation must abide by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rules.  Please visit their website here, to verify the status of any Registered Canadian Charity, or to learn more about CRA rules and guidelines.  The CRA offers very clear and concise policy statements.
